Vintage Photos of The World’s Oldest and Biggest Cypress Pond Tree Located in Longwood Florida, Seminole County

Big Tree Park Longwood Florida Seminole County Fl

The Senator tree existed in Big Tree Park of Longwood, Florida. For a long time, it was the biggest and oldest pond cypress tree in the world. The tree grew to be 125 feet tall (38m). The trunk diameter was 17.5 feet (5.3).

In 1927, Florida State Senator Moses Overstreet donated the tree and the surrounding area to Seminole County for the purpose of creating a park. The Senator was named after him.

On January 16, 2012, fire destroyed The Senator. Sara Barnes was arrested for the fire. Doing drugs, the methamphetamine user lit a fire inside the hollow of the tree. She claims she started the fire so she can see better.

Recently, I came across two vintage photos of The Senator, photos owned by my late aunt Mary Elizabeth Anderson.

A postcard stamped 1942.
